TWWOTW - edition 1
Welcome to this brand new series of curated awesomeness. Each week we will serve you the best of the web. Five pieces of inspiration. This week for example, you will go on a ferris wheel way, way up in the sky...
Rails Girls Rotterdam
Last Friday and Saturday we were host to Rails Girls. Once started in Finland, Rails Girls is now a global, non-profit volunteer community aimed to give tools and create a community for women to understand technology and to build their ideas. We decided to join with a few girls from Mangrove ourselves too, for two fun days of sketching, prototyping and basic programming.
The Connected Car
This year at CES (Consumer Electronics Show) there were a lot of new gadgets and systems for connecting cars to the internet and to your smartphone. Because Mangrove develops apps in the automotive market we are very interested in the possibilities it gives us to come up with solutions. Let's have a closer look at some of the major developments that were presented.
New Defaults in Web Design
About one month ago the Inspire Conference was held in the city auditorium in Leiden. Through this post I briefly want to look back at Vasilis van Gemerts talk. Vasilis is currently a front-end developer at Mirabeau and his topic at Inspire was called (and about) New Defaults in Web Design. During his presentation I made some quick notes, which I hope were good enough to summarize the contents correctly.

2012: a year in apps
We're nearing the end of the year. I thought it would be nice to share my favorite mobile apps of 2012 with you. From ski jumping to some serious GTD stuff. I'm using an iPhone, so it's all for iOS. But a lot of these are available in Google Play as well. I hope you find some of them useful too. Here we go:
Video: Ready to Inspire 2012
Last week we were proud supporter of Ready to Inspire Conference. A four day conference & event about web design, type and code. As it's difficult to explain in text how enthusiastic I am about the outcome, I think this video of the main conference day will convince you to join next year in Chicago, Sao Paulo or, again, in Leiden.

Quest for emotional engagement
Last month I had the opportunity to visit Stephen Anderson’s Quest for Emotional Engagement: an event organised by Q42 and Fabrique. After Stephen spoke the day before at TEDx Utrecht, he now held his presentation and workshop about Information Visualization at the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam. In short: “ready access to information is great. But many times there is too much information, too much data, or too many options to make sense of. People can easily become frustrated or disengage if they can’t connect with what is presented to them.” The opportunity lies in transforming data, which at first sight may look meaningless, to a format that is meaningful for the user.
